How to Crack the JLPT N5 in 3 Months
Passing the JLPT N5 is the first major milestone for anyone dreaming of studying
or working in Japan. While it might seem daunting, a structured 3-month plan can
make success inevitable. Here is your roadmap to crushing the N5.
Month 1: The Foundation (Hiragana, Katakana & Basic Vocabulary)
Do not touch Kanji yet. Your first month should be dedicated to mastering the
scripts and basic sentence structures.
- Week 1-2: Memorize Hiragana and Katakana. Use apps like
Duolingo or flashcards. You must be able to read them without hesitation.
- Week 3-4: Start "Minna no Nihongo I". Cover Lessons 1-6.
Focus on particles (wa, ga, ni, wo) and basic greetings.
- Vocabulary Goal: Learn the first 200 essential words
(numbers, family, days, simple verbs).
Month 2: Grammar & Kanji (The Meat of N5)
Now that you can read, it's time to understand how sentences work and start
recognizing Kanji.
- Grammar: Complete "Minna no Nihongo I" up to Lesson 12-15.
Understand verb conjugations (Masu form, Te form).
- Kanji: The N5 requires about 100 Kanji. Learn 3-4 new Kanji
every day. Focus on their meanings and On/Kun readings.
- Listening: Start listening to "Nihongo con Teppei" for
beginners or watch simple anime/dramas with subtitles.
Month 3: Practice & Simulation
The final month is all about speed and accuracy.
- Past Papers: Solve at least one past paper every week. Time
yourself.
- Vocabulary: Push your vocabulary count to 800 words.
- Listening Practice: JLPT listening can be tricky. Practice
with specific JLPT N5 listening materials found on YouTube.

Consistency is key. Studying 1 hour every day is better than studying 7 hours
once a week. Good luck!
