Everything You Need to Know About the JFT Basic Test

What is JFT?

The JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) is a test to measure the Japanese language proficiency required for communication in everyday life situations in Japan. It is primarily used for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa status.

Purpose of the JFT Basic Exam

The main purpose is to assess if a foreigner has the necessary Japanese language skills to handle daily conversations and life in Japan without difficulties.

Structure of the JFT Basic Test

The test is computer-based (CBT). It consists of four sections:

  • Script and Vocabulary: 12 questions
  • Conversation and Expression: 12 questions
  • Listening: 12 questions
  • Reading: 12 questions

Total time: 60 minutes. Total questions: Approximately 60.

Why Take the JFT Basic Test?

If you are planning to work in Japan under the Specified Skilled Worker visa, passing this test (or JLPT N4) is a mandatory requirement. It proves you can communicate effectively in a Japanese work environment.
